A student assistant in data visualization
Student assistant/HiWi position for data visualization development work:
- 20 hours per week or up to 80 hours per month
- Starting as soon as possible

About the project:
sMon is a Synthesis Project of the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig. It aims to combine and harmonize exemplary datasets of different taxa and habitats and evaluate the potentials and limits for analyzing changes in the state of biodiversity in Germany. Based on these insights, it will derive a perspective for future biodiversity monitoring programs in Germany.
About the role:
To help scientists fulfill these goals, we are building an interactive tool to visualize changes in the spatial distribution of plant species in Germany over time. It is a work in progress, and for its completion, we are looking for a student helper (Hiwi). The primary responsibility would be to finish the development of this geospatial tool. The project infrastructure is as follow:
- Backend: Python, Flask, Geopandas for Geojson
- Frontend: JavaScript
- Database: SQLite
- Visualization Library: d3.js for visualization and jquery/bootstrap for UI elements
The successful candidate should have substantial hands-on experience in the libraries mentioned above. After the satisfactory completion of this project, the candidate could be assigned the other visualization projects within the group. For which, the developer needs to know python visualization libraries very well. A good understanding of the C# and MVC framework is a plus.
